I am twenty years old, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, and a creative writing graduate of the Alabama School of Fine Arts. Now a student at the University of Alabama, I am spending the year abroad, living and studying in Paris, France. I am frequently delighted by activities that involve lots of tools, gadgets, and design— things like book binding and letterpress printing, developing prints in a dark room, or collecting stationery and antique cameras.
For the 2008-2009 academic year, I am studying French at the Sorbonne. I'm also enrolled in a few electives at the American University of Paris. Primarily, I hope to come away from Paris thoroughly fluent in French, especially where spontaneous and lengthy dinner conversation is concerned; one can only feel proficient asking for directions and ordering petit déjeuner for so long. My year abroad will also be my first experience living in a major city, moving more than four hundred miles, and spending more than a couple of weeks in a foreign country.
